Last October, the Department of Energy (DOE) set new, increased minimum energy conservation standards for residential HVAC equipment and created different standards for the Northern, Southeatern, and Southwestern regions. The new standards for most furnaces will take effect in May 2013, with those for central air conditioners and heat pumps coming in 2015. So what does this mean for contractors? In this learning lab you will get a brief overview the AFUE, SEER, and HSPF standards in your state, when they will take effect, what the regions look like, and how the DOE has proposed to enforce these new rules.
